Walks from our door

Some walks start at the garden gate; the rest are a short drive or a ferry away. Below our own favourites is a list of Department of Conservation tracks within thirty kilometres of the apartments, kept up to date from DOC's own data — each one links to its DOC page, which is where closures and alerts are published.

The Tor with tidal sandbars under a blue sky

Waiake Beach to the Tor at low tide

Two minutes from the door. Walk the sand to the south end and, when the tide is out, across the rocks to the Tor itself. Allow an hour with the rock pools; check the tide first.

Wet sand at Waiake Beach, the headland and Norfolk pines

North Shore Coastal Walk — it passes our gate

The Te Araroa trail's North Shore section runs 31.4 km from Long Bay to Devonport along cliff-top paths, beaches and rocky foreshore, and it comes straight along the Waiake beachfront. Walk a leg or two from here: north to Long Bay by the cliff path, or south over the Lotus Walk to Browns Bay and on round the bays. Six to seven hours for the whole thing; several stretches are passable only around low tide, so check the tide first.

The coastal path to Long Bay

North from the beach the path climbs the headland and drops into Long Bay Regional Park — cliff-top views one way, the Gulf the other. Combine it with a swim and the park's café.

Long Bay to Okura — the Coastal Track

From the north end of Long Bay the Coastal Track follows the cliffs and bays of the marine reserve to the Okura estuary; it is passable around low tide and takes a couple of hours each way.

Native bush on the Okura Bush Walkway

Ōkura Bush Walkway

A DOC track through regenerating native bush to the Okura estuary and Dacre Cottage, one of the oldest surviving houses in the region. Twenty minutes' drive; kauri-dieback cleaning stations at the entrances — please use them.
