Torbay Sailing Club — on the beach at the end of the road

The club has sailed off Waiake Beach since 1959 and traces its roots to one of Auckland's earliest yacht clubs. It is volunteer-run, family-minded and open about who it welcomes: Olympians and round-the-world sailors have started here, and so have nine-year-olds in Optimists. It is also the home of Yachting New Zealand's 49er programme, which is why Olympic-class skiffs launch off our beach.

Learn to sail

The club runs beginner courses from its own beach: four-day school-holiday courses and six-week Saturday courses for children and teenagers, and six-week Saturday courses and a short refresher for adults. Boats and lifejackets are provided; children need to be able to swim 50 metres. Places and dates are the club's — book with them directly, and tell us if you'd like a hand.

Sunday club racing

From September to May the club races every Sunday, with the briefing at 10 am and the fleets launching off the beach soon after. Visiting sailors are welcome for a small entry fee on the day, and spectators have the best seats in the house: the sand, the reserve and our terrace.

Sir Peter Blake Regatta — first weekend of December

Every year the bay fills with several hundred young sailors and their families for what the club describes as the largest youth regatta in the Southern Hemisphere, raced for the Sir Peter Blake Memorial Trophy and with a tree planted for every entry. The whole bay takes part; book early for that weekend, and expect our minimum-stay period to apply.
